This morning was all fall: damp, chilly, the sky a crisp and empty blue. Leaves floated down from every tree and rustled under Howl’s feet as he bounded around outside. We couldn’t waste this weather! So, instead of staying cooped up and filling out a bunch of worksheets, I decided to take Goo to the local conservation center for her homeschooling. We printed off a few “autumn scavenger hunts,” collected a bag of art supplies, and headed out.
While searching for things like yellow leaves and spiderwebs, I couldn’t resist pulling out my phone for the occasional snapshot. And yes, I added some VSCO presets because I’m one of “those” people. I like the A4 preset best, but sometimes A6 works better, especially if there are people in the shot.
To my surprise, Goo really wanted to bring her sketchbook and draw everything on the list as she found it. She even later added a few more things to the list. I really liked watching her get enthusiastic about art!
Afterward, we went into the “nature center” and sat in the library, where we drew mushrooms from books and read. We even learned a few animal signs for our sign language. Goo insisted on drawing many of the animals on display, which was definitely okay with me.
Because of how smoothly everything was going–and because it was still so nice out–Goo and I went to the store to grab a few apples and headed to the park. I painted while she played, still tinkering around with this handmade paper and my new Prima “woodlands” palette. Music of choice? Jazzzzzz.
We have definitely got to do this again! Here’s hoping for another cool week next week so we can get our art on.
My autumn leaves watercolor will be available on my Etsy soon!
